Robbie Benson is an Irish midfielder that plays for current champions Dundalk.
Robbie began his career with Athlone Town and represented Ireland at under 16, 17 and 18 level. After making 38 League appearances for Athlone, he chose to sign for UCD so he could combine academic studies with football. After achieving 600 points in his Leaving Certificate (the highest score possible), Robbie would go on to earn a degree in Chemistry and Maths followed by a Masters in Actuarial Science.
Whilst studying, Robbie appeared in 127 League fixtures for UCD, scoring 28 goals and he became the club captain. In December 2015, Robbie signed for Dundalk and turned professional for the first time and in his first season with the club (in 2016) he appeared 24 times in the Irish Premier Division, scoring 3 goals. He also appeared 10 times in the Champions League and then Europa League, scoring against BATE, Legia Warsaw and Zenit. His goal against Legia became an internet sensation - a fiercely struck volley that was measured at 92 km/h.
Robbie began the 2017 season in blistering form - scoring on the opening fixture of the season - but sustained an injury on the 25th March away to Cork that sidelined him for a few weeks. Once back, Robbie's top form soon returned and 2017 would be his best season of his career to date. 9 League goals were supplemented by regular stellar performances from midfield, including playing every minute in both legs of the Champions League fixture against Rosenborg.
