Dion Donohue





Anglesey-rasied Dion was a product of the Bodedern FC's academy in Wales before he was signed as a youngster by Everton . Dion remained at Everton for six years, playing alongside the likes of Ross Barkley and winning Wales Under 18 national honours.

After being released by Everton at 16, Dion chose to pursue an education although alongside that he would regularly star for the successful Welsh Colleges team. He also played football in the Welsh leagues on an amateur basis - turning out for Porthmadog, Holyhead Hotspur and Caernarfon Town.

As his education became more important - Dion chose to qualify as an engineer - a move to the Midlands would see him also playing part-time football in the 2014/15 season for Sutton Coldfield in the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South. Dion played 37 times for Sutton Coldfield and was instrumental as they gained promotion to the seventh tier of the English game.

In the summer of 2015, after impressing on trial, Dion became the latest player to show that the pathway for non-league to the professional game remains alive and kicking - putting his career as an engineer on hold whilst signing an one year contract with the League One club just over five years after he left Everton and the full-time game.

Dion's first taste of senior action came on the 11th August 2015 when he was named as a substitute for Chesterfield's League Cup fixture away to Carlisle. His professional and Football League arrived on the 12th September 2015 when he entered the field of play as a substitute at home to Colchester United.

On the 6th October 2015, Dion started his first game for Chesterfield - he played the full game against Rochdale in the Football League Trophy. His next appearance was on the 5th December when he started in the FA Cup 2nd round at home to Walsall, playing as a left wing-back. His first start in the Football League came on the 12th December away to Bury and he retained his place for the following ten fixtures - playing either left-back, wing-back or central midfield. By the end of Dion's breakthrough season in pro football, he had appeared 17 times in League One and 20 times in all competitions.
