Corbin Shires

Mansfield Town

Central Defender

Corbin Shires spent his very early years with Sheffield Wednesday's Academy before he made his mark in non-league football.

A 6ft 7 central defender with excellent technique and feet for one so tall, Corbin was playing senior football for Hallam FC and Worksop from the age of 15 and it was whilst playing for Workshop that he scored a winning goal in the FA Youth Cup against Mansfield.

Mansfield signed Corbin as a scholar in the summer of 2014 but by March 2015 he put pen to paper on his first professional contract. On the 25th April 2015 he was named as a substitute in the Football League for the first time, home to Portsmouth, but on 2nd May 2015 (aged 17) he made his professional and League debut away to Accrington Stanley as a 73rd minute substitute.

In the 2015/2016 season Corbin made his first professional start on the 11th August 2015 in the League Cup - away to none other than Sheffield Wednesday in front of over 14,000 fans. Corbin impressed and but for an illness which affected a number of Mansfield players then decimating much of the season, he perhaps would have gone on to make further first team appearances. As it was, he appeared as a substitute in the League on three further occasions as Corbin returned to full fitness before the season ended.
