Press Statement released by SOFIA on 1st April 2017
SOFIA is born……
The ‘Society of Football Intermediaries and Agents’ (SOFIA) is now up and running!
After over a year of planning – Liz Ellen (putative Chair of SOFIA and a solicitor who is the Head of Sports and a Partner at Mishcon de Reya in London and a former FA Licensed Agent and representative on the FA Agents’ Panel), Jonathan Booker (owner and director of Chiron Sports and Media, a former FA Licensed Agent and now a FA Registered Intermediary), Dan Chapman (a solicitor and Senior Partner of Full Contact and a FA Registered Intermediary), Richard Trafford (owner and director of Trafford Sports, a former FA Licensed Agent and now a FA Registered Intermediary) and a number of other leading players in the UK football agency marketplace to include a former Chief Executive of a Premier League club – SOFIA is now established as an independent representative organisation aimed at those legally authorised to operate in the field of professional football representation.
SOFIA’s mission statement is, whilst representing the voice of authorised football agents and intermediaries, to promote professionalism, best practice, high standards, ethics and improvement in the field of professional football representation.
Any authorised agent or intermediary who wishes to become a member of SOFIA will need to adhere to rules and regulations which go further than (but compliment) those imposed by the FA; a key aspect of SOFIA’s attempts to resolve – for the good of the game – the many problems that have arisen since the momentous decision taken by FIFA to deregulate the licensed football agency industry in 2015. With this additional regulation placed upon its members – coupled with its own dispute resolution process – SOFIA aims to develop strong relationships with all of the game’s major stakeholders, participants and governing bodies. Indeed, all of the major stakeholders have been provided with the opportunity to have input in to the draft Regulations prior to their adoption.
Commenting on the birth of SOFIA, Liz Ellen said “I am delighted to have been appointed as the first Chair of SOFIA, a post I will hold until the role is filled on a democratic vote. As an experienced sports lawyer, and formerly a Licensed Agent and Agents’ Representative on the FA’s Agents Panel, I am well aware of the challenges that the agency industry faces, but also the challenges that the governing bodies, clubs and players face when dealing with agents (and now intermediaries). SOFIA is an independent representative body that we believe will play a key role in enhancing the reputation of football intermediaries and building strong links within the game as a whole. SOFIA exists not only to help its members attain and sustain high professional standards that are recognised by the stakeholders in football but to give its members a credible voice on matters affecting their role in the industry.”
