Full Contact client Chris Ingram has moved in to the ERC Juniors Championship lead after finishing second in the Azores Rally.
Following his second place finish at his first rally of the season in Ireland, another runner-up performance in the Azores was more than good enough to see Chris – England’s no.1 ranked rally driver – take a commanding lead in ERC Junior standings. The 28 points scored in total by Chris in the Azores sees him move to 57 points overall, with nearest challenger Lukasz Pieniazek on 41 points. Opel team-mate and expected Championship rival Marijan Griebel currently sits in fourth position with 33 points.
Throughout the challenging rally on the Portuguese island, Chris’ first on gravel in his new Opel Adam R2 car, he consistently finished in the top four places during the sixteen stages – securing four stage wins along the way. His stunning win in the difficult stage 7 particularly caught the eye – as well as winning the stage by almost 20 seconds he finished in eleventh position in the overall rally, beating numerous ERC and ERC2 drivers.
Chris, who finished fifth in the Juniors Championship in 2015 in his debut season (driving for Peugeot) was delighted with how his 2016 season has started with new team Opel; “Last season I had some outstanding weekends but quite a few where we could not finish the rally and suffered mechanical problems. This year, with the excellent Opel team around me, the plan is to deliver consistent performances and to try and score heavy at each rally. I am delighted with the second place, again, because to win a Championship these are the weekends that are needed and we can now move on to Belgium with great confidence.”
As well as leading the ERC Juniors Championship by 16 points, Chris’ solid start to the season also sees him tied for the lead of the overall ERC3 category – he and Hungarian driver Zoltan Bessenyey have both scored 57 points to date.
Up next is the Belgian rally in Ypres, 23rd to 25th June 2016.
