Full Contact client and Bermudian international Rai Simons has signed terms to join Chesterfield in the summer.
As part of the deal agreed between Rai’s current club Ilkeston and the League one outfit, Rai will complete the season for the promotion chasing Evo-Stik Premier club. Rai will then return to Bermuda for vital World Cup duty (the islanders take on Guatemala over two legs in the next stage of their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign) before reporting back to the Spireites for pre-season duty.
Chesterfield moved early to secure Rai’s services as he becomes the latest player to move from Ilkeston to the professional game – this season alone has seen other Full Contact clients Che Adams, Ashley Hunter, Akil Wright and Joe Burgess leave the non-league side for League One clubs. Rai’s move to the professional game is also part of a wider Full Contact initiative representing a number of Bermudian players, and he follows international team-mates Nakhi Wells and Reggie Lambe in to the Football League.
Dan Chapman, senior partner of Full Contact, said “Rai has attracted interest from a number of clubs for some time, but it is good to now to see him progress and to secure the next stage of his career before he returns home for World Cup duty and the summer break. This move is due reward for a number of people who have worked tirelessly in Bermuda to give young players an opportunity in England and we are proud to be a part of that; and of course it is yet another remarkable example of the stunning work that has been done at Ilkeston FC.”
Lee Payne said “Rai has tremendous raw ability, as a number of players from Bermuda seem to have, but he has allied that with some great experience of playing senior football in non-league and also now at international level. It is a fairly unique combination of experience that he has, and we think Chesterfield have a very good prospect on their hands who they can nurture and develop over time.”
