Full Contact client Gboly Ariyibi has today signed for League One club Chesterfield.
Gboly, 19, pictured here with Chesterfield’s chief executive Chris Turner and Full Contact’s Lee Payne has put to pen on an one year contract.
Gboly, who came through the same Southampton academy side as the likes of Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse, signed for Leeds United as a 18 year old – and very quickly bypassed the Under 21 squad and joined Brian McDermott’s first team squad. Making his first team debut as an impressive 61st minute substitute on the 29th December 2013 away to Nottingham Forest, an injury would ultimately limit Gboly’s season to four Football League appearances.
Lee Payne said “Gboly really caught the eye in his brief cameo appearances for Leeds United last season, and he was most unfortunate to have joined that club at a time of turmoil ; given his age, and huge potential, I think history will prove that Leeds United’s loss is very much Chesterfield’s gain. We are delighted to see Gboly sign at Chesterfield, a club we know well with a track record of nurturing and developing talented young players. Gboly had no shortage of clubs interested in him after the release from Leeds, including a Premier League offer, but Gboly wants to play as much first team football as possible and he’s got a great platform to kick on and do that now.”
