Auto GP was established in 2010 (after previously being known as Euroseries 3000) and is seen as one of the gateways to GP2 or World Series; last year’s champion Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, for example, has now proceeded to GP2 for 2013. The 2010 Auto GP champion was Romain Grosjean, who is now an established Formula 1 driver and in its earlier form, participants en route to their Formula 1 careers included Felipe Massa, Vitaly Petrov and Luiz Razia.
Zele Racing are an Austrian based team, which was founded by former motorbike racer Hermann Zele and his son Michael in 2001. Their former drivers include Timo Glock, Max Chilton and Narain Karthikeyan, all of whom subsequently made the transition to Formula 1.
As for Luciano, a hectic close season since winning the Formula 2 title saw him testing the Williams Formula 1 car, competing in the MRF Challenge races in India and undertaking testing in both World Series and GP2, before settling on Auto GP with Zele Racing as his drive for 2013.
Luciano Bacheta said “I am very happy to be racing for Zele in 2013 and I hope I can help the team challenge for success. The Auto GP car is very quick, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Dan Chapman, senior partner of Full Contact, said “We are pleased that after an awful lot of hard work by Luciano, his family, supporters and those of us who believe in his talent his plans for 2013 have been settled. Auto GP is establishing itself as an extremely exciting series, with races all over the world, and for Luciano this represents a good step up from Formula 2. With hopefully another successful season he will be one step closer to realising the dream of Formula 1, probably via GP2 or World Series, both of which levels Luciano has already tested in.”
Michael Zele, team owner of Zele Racing, said “It is great to have the reigning Formula 2 champion on board. Luciano is a highly-talented driver, who has already proven his skill on several occasions. I am certain we are ahead of a good season.”
Luciano will be racing throughout the 2013 Auto GP season at Monza, Marrakech, Hungary, Silverstone, Zandvoort, Nurburgring, Donington and Brno.
All at Full Contact look forward to an exhilarating season of motor racing ahead.
