We were delighted and very proud at Full Contact last night to watch our client Jernade Meade make his professional debut for Arsenal, away at Reading in the Capital One cup.
Not content to make his debut in any game, Jernade did so in a game which will long live in the memory, and which this morning many pundits are calling the ‘game of the century’.
Arsenal were 4-0 down to Reading before Theo Walcott reduced the deficit in first half injury time. Having further reduced the deficit to 4-3 in the second half, Reading looked to have hung on for a famous victory before Walcott scored the second goal of what would prove to be a hat-trick in the fifth minute of added time. Jernade would have been as delighted as any at seeing extra time forced, since this would prove to be his opportunity to enter the fray and make that much awaited professional display.
Entering the game with fifteen minutes or so to play, Jernade showed enough of his pace, positional awareness and strength (notably surviving without flinch an extremely robust challenge that resulted in a yellow card for the Reading offender) to demonstrate why he is regarded as such a promising talent for the future.
Arsenal ultimately won the game by a quite incredible 7-5 scoreline, and we are sure that last night will prove to be the start of a wonderful journey for Jernade. The professional debut is of course also a time for reflection and is reward for the years of hard work that has gone before, but also a reward for those vital family members and friends who have provided much needed support.
We know one thing for sure; if Jernade’s professional career lasts another fifteen years, it is quite unlikely he will feature in another game with 12 goals!
